Wild & Loose Watercolor Workshop – Let Go of Perfection and Play

What if watercolor isn’t supposed to be controlled perfectly?

What if some of the most beautiful parts of painting happen when we loosen our grip, let go of perfection, and allow watercolor to do what it naturally wants to do?

That’s the heart behind Wild & Loose, an upcoming watercolor workshop with artist DeElla Hoberg at the Cumming Arts Center.

This playful, experimental workshop is designed for artists who want to loosen up, quiet the inner critic, and rediscover the joy of watercolor painting.

Instead of focusing on rigid technique or perfection, students will explore expressive watercolor methods that embrace movement, texture, atmosphere, and happy accidents. The workshop encourages curiosity, experimentation, and learning how to work with watercolor rather than constantly trying to control it.

During the workshop, students will experiment with:

  • Wet-on-wet watercolor techniques

  • Granulation effects

  • Salt texture

  • Alcohol effects

  • Expressive mark-making

  • Unconventional tools

  • Layering and atmosphere

  • Letting watercolor move naturally

Yes — there may even be straws and household items involved.

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Beginners who feel tight or overworked in their paintings

  • Intermediate artists stuck in perfectionism

  • Experienced painters who want to loosen their style

  • Anyone craving creativity, curiosity, and play

No drawing skills are required. Just a willingness to experiment.

Students will leave with multiple expressive studies, new techniques to explore, and a refreshed relationship with watercolor itself.
