The Art of Celebration: Painting “Pop”

ree

Pop Watercolor on Canvas by DeElla Hoberg

Sometimes you just need some bubbles!

This painting, Pop, is all about joy — the effervescent kind that fizzes up from the inside when you’re celebrating a big win, reconnecting with friends, or simply taking a deep breath at the end of a long week.

When I started this piece, I wanted to paint something loose and free, something that felt like that very first sip of champagne — light, sparkly, and full of promise. The translucent gold tones shimmer against a soft background of flowing purples and blues, capturing that in-between moment where excitement meets calm.

Like my painting Trigger, this piece was also created on watercolor canvas. I’ve been experimenting with working without glass and exploring how color behaves on this surface. Watercolor on canvas is less predictable than on paper — the paint sits differently, moves differently — but that unpredictability is exactly what made Pop such a delight to create.

I wanted to let go of control and just play. The background drips and blooms are intentional — they echo the natural rise and fall of champagne bubbles, the blur of motion, and the feeling of laughter that lingers in the air at a celebration.

Art doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes, it’s a toast to the beauty of the moment.

You can see Pop in person (and purchase it!) at the Cumming Arts Center’s newly opened “Muse” exhibit.
