Watercolor artist DeElla Hoberg is now enrolling students in new sessions of Watercolor Next Steps, an intermediate watercolor course designed for painters who are ready to move beyond the basics and develop greater confidence, control, and artistic understanding.
This six-week class is ideal for students who have completed a beginner watercolor course or already have a basic understanding of watercolor materials and color mixing. Rather than focusing only on exercises and techniques, Watercolor Next Steps helps students learn how to create paintings that feel intentional, cohesive, and expressive.
Throughout the course, students will deepen their understanding of:
Water control and edge handling
Layering watercolor without muddying colors
Using value to create depth and dimension
Understanding color temperature and mood
Simplifying compositions
Strengthening design choices
Building confidence and trusting artistic instincts
Each class includes demonstrations, guided practice, thoughtful discussion, and individualized feedback in a welcoming, supportive environment.
A major focus of the course is learning how to move beyond overworked paintings and second-guessing. Students will explore how to make stronger creative decisions while allowing watercolor to remain fresh, luminous, and expressive.
DeElla’s teaching style emphasizes process over perfection, experimentation, and helping students feel more connected to their own artistic voice.
By the end of the six-week session, students will have a stronger technical foundation, a deeper understanding of watercolor, and greater confidence in their ability to begin and complete successful paintings.
