n this workshop, students will learn how to thoughtfully layer watercolor, acrylic, ink, markers, colored pencil, and other materials to create depth, interest, and meaning. We’ll talk about how to build a painting in stages, how to know when a layer is finished, and how to bring harmony to a piece that uses more than one medium.
A key part of this class is shifting the way we think about work that feels “stuck.” Students are welcome to bring in a piece they’re unsure about—or start something new—and learn how mixed media can be used to adjust, enhance, and re-envision a painting rather than abandon it. The focus isn’t on fixing mistakes, but on discovering what the piece wants to become.
Throughout the workshop, we’ll approach mixed media through the lens of storytelling. Using guided prompts and demonstrations, students will explore how personal experiences, memories, and emotions can inform their choices of materials, marks, and layers.
This workshop is perfect for artists who:
Want to explore mixed media with more confidence
Feel hesitant about combining materials
Enjoy expressive, layered artwork
Are curious about using art as a storytelling tool
Students will leave with a richer understanding of mixed media, a finished or transformed piece, and the confidence to approach future work without fear.
