Thereās something really special about painting animals.
They donāt pose perfectly. They donāt sit still. And they definitely donāt try to look āpolished.ā
What they do have⦠is personality.
And thatās exactly what I try to capture when I paint a pet portrait.
šØ Meet Louie
Louie came to me as a commission, and from the very beginning, it was clearāthis wasnāt just any portrait.
This was a dog with a story.
Between the reference photos and the conversations with his owner, one thing stood out right away:
š Louie loves his sticks.
And not just casuallyāthisĀ is his thing. His personality. His signature.
So instead of creating a formal, posed portrait, we leaned into that.
šæ Telling the Story Through the Painting
When I approach a commission like this, Iām not just thinking about likenessāIām thinking about story.
What makes this animal thisĀ animal?
For Louie, it came down to a few key elements:
The stickĀ (of course)
Those expressive eyes
His stanceācurious, a little playful, a little determined
We even adjusted the reference slightly so his ears were upābecause that added just a little more alertness and personality to the piece.
šØ The Process
This painting was done in watercolor, which always brings its own kind of unpredictability.
Thereās a balance between:
letting the paint do what it wants to do
and stepping in to guide the details
The background was kept loose and painterlyāsoft greens and movementāso Louie could stay the focus.
Because in the end, this painting isnāt about the setting.
Itās about him.
š Why Pet Portraits Matter
One of the things I love most about commissions like this is what they represent.
These arenāt just paintings.
Theyāre:
companions
memories
little pieces of someoneās everyday life
And being trusted to capture that is something I donāt take lightly.
š¾ A Final Thought
Louie isnāt just a dog in a painting.
Heās a moment.A habit.A personality.
And hopefully, when his owner looks at this piece, they donāt just see what he looks likeā
They feel who he is.
